I baked a pie yesterday for the first time in my life. Many thanks to Mike and Amy for supplying the idea and recipe, my in-laws for the main ingredient, and my husband for being willing to try something that "looks like, smells like, tastes like" apple pie, but is actually made with...zucchini. 'Tis the season, right?
Aside from being a little slimier than your average apple pie, the confection really lived up to its claim - if I hadn't known it was zucchini, I couldn't have guessed. And my first-ever pie crust, while nothing to brag about, did look pretty good woven together in what my cookbook calls a 'classic lattice pattern with fluting.' Who writes these things?
In continuing with my attempts to be a little more domestic, today I'm making fruit leather. This is also a slimy project. And I didn't realize until I started de-seeding the pears that I had never seen a pear seed. They're encased in a thick membrane way down inside the pear, just in case you were wondering. Did you notice that I've ended every paragraph so far with a question?
In other news, Truman is as close to walking as a boy can be without actually doing it. He took a few very wobbly steps today - before he realized what he was doing and promptly sat down. He also carries on long conversations with me, his teddy bear, playground equipment, and wooden spoons in a mostly-excited but ever-foreign tongue. It's so cute that I almost don't want him to learn English. He's at a very huggable and snuggly stage right now too; yet another reason to want to freeeze him right where he is. Since I can't do that, I guess I'll just have to soak up the cuteness (complete with cheesy, wrinkly-nose smile) while I can.
For the first time in my life I feel like I am consciously trying to live in the moment, and when I succeed, it is pure joy.

Zucchini pie was surprisingly tasty. I like that little wobbly foreigner too.
You sound happy...and that makes me happy :)
The only reason I know pears have seeds is that Max decided to eat a whole one the other day, from one end to the other, seeds included. We were flossing them out of his teeth for hours.
Zucchini pie... never heard of it! I'd like to try it sometime. HEY brittany, I found your blog off your facebook and thought i'd say HI! I love your blog- You're so funny(:
I love one. It is one of my favorite ages. Their eyes are so big and they are so happy and wobbley on their new legs. But one question...what the heck is zucchini pie and how is it anything like apple?
If it is any comfort, I think I want to freeze my kids at all kinds of ages and then they (often) get cuter.
Truman gets cuter every time I see him! I need to see him again soon.
could we get a movie of these conversations?
It sounds like you are in a great place in life. I'm excited to see you and to meet Truman. Can we make fruit leather together sometime? Fun!
Um, that was Angie, not Todd. I'm signed into his account, apparently.
You little domestic goddess you. How did you think up a zucchini pie?
Glad the zucchini pie was a success. I want your recipe for fruit leather.
Sounds like you've been having fun. I'd love that zucchini pie recipe too. Sounds interesting.
What a blissful and happy post. I enjoyed it and completely agree about wanting to freeze the moment in time. I've found that even though there are many moments I wish would never end, I'm glad they do so I can experience a million more in my life.
Tell Truman not to worry, I still take a few wobbly steps sometimes before I'm prompted to sit down.
